Mining & Scientific Exploration

San Francisco Jet Charter arranges flights for mining, survey and scientific teams working out of Northern California, the trips where the destination has no scheduled service and often not much of a runway either.

Getting to places airlines do not go

Exploration and research sites are chosen for geology, not for airport access. That makes aircraft selection the first question rather than the last. A turboprop reaches airstrips that jets cannot use, and for short or unpaved surfaces it is frequently the only sensible answer. Where the site has a longer paved runway, a jet cuts the transit time significantly.

Your advisor will work through the field at the far end with you before anything is quoted, because the answer changes the aircraft, the cost and sometimes the routing.

Teams, samples and equipment

These trips rarely involve just people. Survey instruments, drilling samples, core boxes and field equipment travel too, and some of it needs particular handling. Tell us what is coming with the team, including weights and dimensions, and whether anything is classified as dangerous goods. That detail changes which operators can take the work.

Where the equipment is the main cargo and the team follows separately, a cargo charter is often the better arrangement.

Remote operations and long lead times

Work in remote regions usually crosses borders, and that brings landing permits and customs authorizations into the planning. Permits are generally applied for after a trip has been secured on the aircraft schedule, and sometimes the timeline is dictated by the local airport authorities. Book early for anything with a fixed start date on site.

Long-running programs

Exploration programs run for months, with people rotating in and out on a pattern. If that is your situation, tell us the shape of the program rather than just the first flight, and we can plan around it instead of pricing each rotation cold.

Vetting Behind Every Trip

Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:

  • FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
  • Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates.
  • Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
  • Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.

San Francisco-Specific Patterns We Plan Around

Tower hours determine the trips more than anything else. Only San Francisco International and Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport are towered around the clock; Hayward Executive closes in the late afternoon, and Livermore runs weekday daytime hours with a short window on weekends. For an early departure or a late return, that difference decides the airport. Customs is narrow in this region too, with San Francisco, Oakland, Mineta San Jose and Monterey Regional the fields that clear international arrivals. Trips into the Sierra are their own case, where elevation and terrain shape the aircraft choice more than the distance does.
